The mustard oil your grandmother would recognise
Most mustard oil on the shelf is expeller-pressed at high speed, then bleached and deodorised until it smells of nothing. Gramiko Black Mustard Oil is pressed in a wooden ghani that turns slowly enough to keep the temperature down. Nothing is added and nothing is stripped out.
How we make it
- Seed: Whole black mustard sourced directly from farms, cleaned and sun-dried before pressing.
- Press: Traditional wooden kachi ghani, low RPM, low temperature.
- Filter: Settled and cloth-filtered only. No solvent, no bleaching, no deodorising.
- Fill: Bottled in small batches so it reaches you fresh.
How to use it
Heat until it just begins to smoke, then take it off the flame for a moment — this mellows the sharpness. Perfect for Bengali and North Indian cooking, achaar and pickles, fish and meat marinades, sarson ka saag, and tempering. Also used traditionally for massage and hair.
What you will notice
- Strong, clean pungency and a rich amber-brown colour
- Natural sediment may settle at the bottom — that is unrefined oil behaving normally
- A little goes further than refined oil, so use less than you are used to
Storage
Keep the cap tight, store in a cool dark place away from direct sunlight. Use a dry spoon. Best used within 6 months of opening.
